Frankenstein eeepc 701

Some of you were aware of my little pet project with the Asus eeePC 701 that I had.  I got a little carried away and decided to do likewise for my dear friend Danny, only to damage his screen in the process.  To rescue his, I transplanted my screen to his, and in the process, defunc my own.

Not wanting to waste a good piece of hardware, I decided to transplant the eeepc to a unused 15" LCD.  The initial plan was to just hook it but soon the "itchy-hand"ness took over.  Before you know it, i mount the eeepc to the LCD, hack open the LCD, transplant the eeepc's speakers in and mount the end result on an lcd arm.

Close-up softbox.

Think Pei Ling is going to laugh at me again.  "Such a geek!" she would say.

Alright, think of it as slightly extreme way of solving a problem.  Now, I was shooting Singapore Paediatric Congress over the weekend.  One problem I encounter was how to light up the speaker's face without washing out the projector screen.  Snooting my strobe didn't work very well due to fall out as well as the shadow it throws out.  Ideally a soft box near the speaker would be good, but it will be very unsightly.

I came out with this idea of using the diffuser from a broken LCD screen to create a flat soft box.  Managed to find a small strobe from John 3:16.  Hacked out the content, relocated the tube and reflector onto the bottom of the diffuser panel.  Viola!

World's smallest and flattest mini softbox!
